Plastique Fantastique, POLYMETER, 2025, polyurethane film, kelp, sound, ventilator, 350 x 600 x 600 cm.
Plastique Fantastique is an artist duo composed of Yena Young and Marco Canevacci. Known for their immersive spatial installations, they explore the boundaries of perception and invite new ways of sensing the existing world.
Their work POLYMETER is an architectural sculpture set on the beach, where materials with different temporalities breathe together in one space. Made of two concentric inflatable membranes, it sits on the sand like a jellyfish stranded on land—or a pearl suspended between permanence and impermanence.
The outer shell of the work is crafted from fossil-fuel-based polyurethane, while the inner membrane is hand-processed using biodegradable material and locally harvested kelp. This delicate core, sensitive to heat and humidity, may dissolve entirely, revealing the fragility of organic life beneath a synthetic skin. These material differences contrast the synthetic durability of substances with the decay of nature, representing an ecological rhythm that dissonates. The title Polymeter comes from music, describing this state where overlapping rhythms flow together but never fully align.
This work embodies the metabolism of life in a world full of plastic. The two layers, coexisting in tension and each maintaining its own rhythm, guide us toward an unknown open future.
