Olaf Holzapfel works with renewable materials such as reeds, straw, fibers, and wood. His practice opens a dialogue between ancestral knowledge and the present system, inviting us to rethink our relationship to land, labor, and tradition that values often overlooked in modern society.
For every project, he initiates a collaborative process that brings together curators, local university professors and students, architects, and artisans with specialized knowledge of the chosen materials. This participatory approach is embedded in every phase of the work, from early research and community engagement to the hands-on realization of the sculpture, where the contributions of artisans are visibly celebrated.
For this exhibition, he presents an installation where inside and outside blur into one another. Created with a local carpenter, the work uses rice straw as sustainable alternatives to concrete. It is situated on the sandy stretch between the reeds of the Gouni Ecological Trail and Dadaepo Beach. Titled In the middle of the dunes, the path is blurred, but there is a beautiful view of what we can be, the work frames the coastal scenery through windows in its walls, placing visitors within a passage between land and shore. Depending on one’s viewpoint, the structure blends into the environment and reveals a new perspective.
This passage reflects the idea of the ecotone, a border zone where two biological communities meet and overlap. By placing his structure within such a liminal space, Holzapfel invites reflection on the interwoven nature of craftsmanship, perception, material engagement, and human action.
