Another Silkroad
Songdo Beach has lost some of its luster as its sandy beach has been narrowed. Although various efforts have been made to revitalize the beach, it is not very popular as a tourist spot. Thus, in an effort to restore the old charm of Songdo, the artists tried to find an image to represent it, and finally came up with the image of the 'modern-day Silk Road'.The Silk Road refers to a network of ancient trade routes that extended across the Asian continent. The Silk Road gets its name from the trade of Chinese silk, the main goods transported from the East to the West along these routes. Bringing various products, including jewels, jade and textile, and spreading Buddhism and Islam to the East, the Silk Road served as the center of logistics and culture of ancient times. In this work, the artists place a large number of camel sculptures to recreate the Silk Road on Songdo Beach. Dreaming of building the center of logistics and culture of Northeast Asia, the camels walk in a row into the sea, to go across the Pacific.
Like the camels on the Silk Road which connected the East and the West in the ancient world, this work symbolizes the globalization and internalization of Songdo, Busan and Korea in modern times. These camels walking into the Pacific are taking the first step in transforming Songdo into a world-class cultural vacation spot.
