Sung's sculptural practice investigates materials and their formal and physical qualities. The artist's sensitivity to materials is unique and profound. Sung often contrasts different materials in order to create meaning, juxtaposing materials of different properties in order to play them off each other. Hard and soft materials come together, creating a harmonious whole. These purely formal and material concerns become symbolically loaded in Sung's work-- materials seem to carry deeper meaning. Hard materials stand in for strength and rigidity while softer materials read as ephemeral, pliable and gentle. Material exploration drives his body of work and the work's final form is determined by the artist's unique and idiosyncratic approach to material.

‘Sound Tree’ is an impressive feat of sculpture. More beautiful that the natural trees that surround it, the sculpted tree is strung with thousands of wind chimes. The combination of the man made and the natural along with the auditory and sensory aspect of the work combine to create a unique experience. At night the tree is lit and appears to create its own space and atmosphere, offering a gentle and moving experience, one that combines hope and melancholy, growth and loss.
